nitroBEAT are working in partnership with Mas Productions to develop their current work 'The Passion of Lady Vendredi'.
Mas Productions is a new experimental theatre company founded by established and extraordinary artists, Jonathan Grieve and Nwando Ebizie, that creates work which seeks to combine the immediacy of music and the conceptualism of live art with theatre and interactive ritual forms.
The Open Artist Laboratory is open to performers, artists, performance artists, dancers, and magicians. Secular Ecstatic Art is a Temporary Autonomous Zone in which extreme impulses, unacceptable identities and prohibited thought are permitted. Adopting various contradictory positions the work is a research into the artistic and magical manipulation of image, symbols and identity.
The workshop will explore artistic syncretism and will include a style of physical training called MCT (mutuality, contact, trust) influenced by East European experimental theatre, martial arts, dance and improvisation. It's a fluid training style designed to develop the performers sense of dynamics for performance. It requires a good level of basic physical fitness, however the purpose is not to excel in the exercises but to initially follow closely. We will endeavour to use the exercises as a way of confronting our own limitations and physical and mental resistances. The crucial element is to maintain the fluidity and to work with a minimum of talking.
We will also be exploring a style of politically charged image work. Performers will create multiple identities, modern Deities and forces of nature using our internal affairs, our domestic affairs and our foreign affairs as s prime source.
The workshop will end with a rendition or synthesis of the work, in the vein of ritual performance on 20th June.
* With support from Theatre Delicatessen.
