The Passion of Lady Vendredi

IMAGINE GRACE JONES IN A GRINDHOUSE FILM DIRECTED BY ROBERT RODRIGUEZ

Cult music icon Lady Vendredi is a mythopoetic super heroine and vodou priestess popstar from another dimension. With an international cast and her band The Vendettas, join her on a time travelling uninhibited mythic journey and quest for revenge.

This viciously beautiful and exuberant immersive music theatre production lets you gaze into the open wound of the world, where a live original soundtrack of pulsating synthetic rhythms and dirty bass drive the tensions between freedom and control, personal gods and demons, censorship and intimacy.

Leave your ideologies at the door and enter an all- encompassing and experiential world of palpable sensuality, staggering insight and intriguing myth-making.

Music

‘Fresh, raw and totally unique’. Gilles Peterson
'An explosive return from a unique artist'. Clash
'Lady Vendredi is more than an artist, she is a movement of force'. Blues and Soul

Mixing traditional Haitian vodou grooves, experimental music, global bass, jazz and hip hop, cult music icon Lady Vendredi launches her debut EP: The Passion of Lady Vendredi, a digital and vinyl release (with input from Floating Points, Emanative, Four Tet and Gilles Peterson), alongside the production.

Her first single ' Dirty Chicken' was featured on Electroclash pioneer Larry Tee's compilation Super Electric Party Machine, receiving plaudits in Mixmag magazine. Second single 'What Time Is It' was championed by Clash and Afropunk, and launched at London's Roundhouse in November 2015 with an exciting live show co-produced by nitroBEAT.

Lady Vendredi now premieres new single 'Papa Legba' a Haitian Vodou Lwa with syncretic versions across Cuban Santeria, Brazilian Candamble, Vodun from Benin and Yoruba Orisha.

The EP is the beginnings of a journey into a mythic quest. It lies within a tension between the transformative potential of ancient rhythms and the ecstatic potential of the club.” Lady Vendredi

The Passion of Lady Vendredi - Audience Trailer 2016

'A voyage through the sublime'

After an explosive opening night of The Passion of Lady Vendredi on 12 April, audiences were queuing up to give us their thoughts!

•Nwando Ebizie

Performance artist, musician, producer, DJ

What Time Is It?

On her single “What Time Is It” Lady Vendredi and her band, the Vendettas create a cacophony of juxtaposed sounds blending elements of vodou and samba rhythms plus space jazz horns. It all adds up to a wonderfully quirky symphony.

Director: Matthew Charles Robinson

Beat Freak

Lady Vendredi's 2012 single "Beat Freak" is a fusion of disparate styles such as Nigerian party music, Blaxploitation and hip hop. The result is a hypnotic family dance-off which even gets Grandma on the floor.

Dirty Chicken

Featured on the Larry Tee/AttackAttackAttack 2014 album: Super Electric Party Machine.

Super Electric Party Machine is 'a pile-up of pounding, ‘ballroom’ vogue-friendly house beats, gut-busting sub-bass and gloriously attitudinous vocalists, from Princess Superstar to Cunty Savage, that feels like the most disreputable rave ever. It reeks of poppers, throbs like a morning-after bruise, and is basically brilliant.' Mixmag 4*

Lady Vendredi - Papa Legba Video

Directed by Richie Simkins.

From the Soundtrack to The Passion of Lady Vendredi at Soho Theatre until 30th April.

Mas Productions is a new experimental theatre company founded by Jonathan Grieve and Nwando Ebizie that creates Secular Ecstatic Art a para-disciplinary work which seeks to combine the immediacy of music, the conceptualism of live art with theatre and interactive ritual forms.

We create a vernacular style of performance, that fuses high and low culture - somewhere between a grindhouse film, a nightclub and a revenge tragedy.

Using emotionally and politically charged images and themes, our work enables audiences to experience the power of mythic narrative, crossing the boundaries of taboos and artforms.

We aim to replicate and re-present the sensationalized taboos of sex, violence, race, crime, drugs, extremism and occultism, and absorb the simulacrum-like mannerisms of the mass media. We adopt the seductive trappings of exploitative entertainment, shock news, film, fashion and the tabloids, exaggerate it to the edge of parody, using traditional or ritual frameworks to turn the focus on highly charged issues.
