Birmingham Repertory Theatre
Developed in partnership with Upfront Comedy and Birmingham Repertory Theatre Stand Up for Your Writes was Nitro’s project that took a long-term look at developing comic talent for musical theatre – through new writing and performance.
Stand Up for Your Writes sunk its teeth into musical comedy, The God Racket by Martin Riley & Felix Cross. Nitro brought together seven of the UK’s foremost stand-up comedians using their unique skills to develop the production and present a showcase directed by Paulette Randall with dramaturgy by Tessa Walker (The REP). The featured comedians were Richard Blackwood, Susan Muarry, Curtis Walker, Shazia Mirza, Gareth Berliner, Jocelyn Jee Esien and Kulvinder Ghir.
STAND UP BITES!
Stand Up Bites! was a week-long daily web series of bite-sized chunks of exclusive behind the scenes comedy theatrics hosted by leading comic & ex Tele-Tubby John Simmit and featuring the comic brilliance of Richard Blackwood, Susan Muarry, Curtis Walker, Shazia Mirza, Gareth Berliner, Jocelyn Jee Esien and Kulvinder Ghir.
In Birmingham’s much loved theatre The REP, Nitro & Upfront took the three things they love the most – theatre, music & comedy -re-mixed it & brought a no-holds barred insight into what happens when you let seven stand-up comedians loose on a new script.
GOD WAS A GANGSTER!
Over 5 short & more-ish video ‘bites’ the comedians brought to life and added their comic-talent to the characters, music and story of Jobey, the poor soul who becomes caught up in a bet between godly gangster Domini and the satanic Luchio. All guided by the formidable Paulette Randall, (Associate Director of the London Olympics opening ceremony) who was no stranger to directing comedians in the West End.
You can view the Stand Up Bites! here. They were originally released on Youtube from Tuesday 11th to Saturday 15th February 2014.
